Police: Elgin man lied about stolen vehicle

A 28-year-old Elgin man faces felony charges after officials say he misled police about how his vehicle ended up in the Fox River.

Jose Morales, 28, of the 600 block of Hampton Circle, Elgin, told police the vehicle, found partially submerged but unoccupied in the Fox River on April 22, had been stolen, according to a news release from the Elgin Police Department.

Police determined the vehicle hadn't been stolen, the release said, and charged Morales with one count of filing a false police report on a stolen vehicle, a class 2 felony.

Morales is due in court Thursday morning in Rolling Meadows.
