Man accused of setting Elgin Tower Building fire

A 58-year-old man has been charged in the May 11 fire in the Elgin Tower Building.

Tommy McBurney, who is homeless, was charged with one felony count of arson, according to a news release from the Elgin Police Department.

The fire was purposely started in a garbage can in an elevator car of the building, located at 100 E. Chicago St. in Elgin, according to the release.

McBurney will appear in Kane County bond court Wednesday.

The city condemned the 1929 building after the fire, forcing its three tenants to move out.
