Downers Grove physician held on child porn charges

A Downers Grove physician who specializes in family medicine is being held on $500,000 bond in DuPage County jail on charges of possessing and sharing child porn.

Edward J. McMenamin, 67, of 4221 Saratoga, Downers Grove, is charged with five counts of dissemination of child pornography and 12 felony charges of possession of child pornography.

According to prosecutors, Downers Grove police received information earlier this year from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding the possible dissemination and possession of child pornography in Downers Grove.

An investigation led authorities to McMenamin, who is accused of having numerous images and videos of child pornography.

A $500,000 warrant was issued for his arrest Thursday morning and he was taken into custody at 5:30 p.m. Thursday outside his home.

According to healthgrades.com, McMenamin has been practicing in Downers Grove for 37 years at his office at 4900 Main St.

Should he be able to post bond, McMenamin is prohibited from having contact with children younger than 18 and accessing a computer or the Internet.

“Any image or video depicting child pornography represents yet another young victim who had their innocence stolen from them just to satisfy the disgusting desires of sexual deviants,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. “The allegations against Dr. McMenamin are very serious and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

McMenamin's next court appearance is scheduled for July 7 before Judge Blanche Hill Fawell.
