1 dead after parolee hits minivan that hits Elgin house, police say

A 40-year-old man is dead and two others were injured after a police pursuit ended with a suspect blowing a stop sign and hitting the minivan the man was driving, Elgin police said. The crash occurred around 5:08 p.m. at the intersection of Liberty and Jefferson streets, police said, and the minivan was sent rolling into a nearby house. The driver of the minivan was pronounced dead later. The suspect is in the hospital and was wanted on parole violation charges. Full story.

Arlington Heights' Metropolis theater looking for new executive director

A permanent replacement is being sought for Charlie Beck, who served as executive director of the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights for 2½ years. The Metropolis board has named former special events manager Neil Scheufler as acting executive director while a permanent replacement for Beck is sought. Full story.

Illinois House OKs budget 'kicking the can down the road'

Having given up on extending Illinois' temporary income tax increase at least for now, the legislature is moving forward with a scaled-back budget that could lead to layoffs, further delays in paying the state's bills and a post-election vote to make the tax hike permanent or generate some other source of revenue. Convicted sex offender pleads guilty to new charges

A man sentenced in January for molesting an 8-year-old child with special needs at a suburban church pleaded guilty Tuesday to two additional charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, prosecutors said. Robert Sobczak, 20, admitted to assaulting a Schaumburg teen who is autistic, blind and developmentally disabled between December 2012 and March 2013. Sobczak also pleaded guilty to charges that he sexually molested a second boy at the church. Full story.

Man charged with raping woman at Elgin hotel

A 34-year-old man has been charged with raping a woman who had passed out from drinking at an Elgin hotel in February, according to police and Kane County court records. Roger D. Eason of Elgin, was arrested by U.S. marshals on Saturday for a parole violation and also was charged with felony criminal sexual assault. Full story.

St. Charles man charged with tax evasion, wire fraud

A St. Charles man and his bookkeeper face federal charges accusing them of scamming credit card companies and filing false tax returns. Viet Nguyen, 41, of St. Charles - who owned Expedite Media Group Inc., VB Management Holding Co. Inc. and Pure Small Business Inc., among others - and his office manager and bookkeeper Adelina Miguel, 37, of Joliet have been indicted on allegations that between 2008 and March 2012 they charged bank accounts and credit and debit cards of customers for services they didn't provide, according to the U.S. attorney's office for the Northern District of Illinois.
