Elgin man accused of car burglary

An alert Elgin resident noticed a stranger in a friend's car Tuesday and called police, which led to burglary charges, police said.

Police responded to a call just before midnight Tuesday from the 600 block of Congdon Avenue, according to a news release.

When the resident approached the vehicle, the man jumped in a nearby parked vehicle and drove away. The resident was able to give a description of the man and fleeing vehicle.

Elgin police located the vehicle in the area and stopped it, recovering several stolen items within, police said.

Anthony Flores, of the 600 block of Ludlow Avenue, was charged with burglary to a motor vehicle, criminal trespass to vehicle, criminal damage to a vehicle, and possession of alcohol by a minor.

A judge on Wednesday set Flores' bond at $20,000.

Elgin police say they'll continue to investigate whether Flores was involved in any other recent car burglaries in the area.

Anyone with information about similar burglaries should call Elgin Detective Andrew Houghton at (847) 289-2620.
