Buffalo Grove student 1st in nation in math contest

Benji Prins, an 8-year-old student at St. Mary School in Buffalo Grove, finished first in the nation among third-graders in the Math Kangaroo mathematics competition.

Benji received a perfect score of 96 points on the third-grade Math Kangaroo test, which is also used as the test for fourth-graders in the contest.

This is Benji's second top-five national finish in the Math Kangaroo competition. Last year, competing as a second-grader, Benji finished in fourth place in the United States.

Benji received his award - a medal and a Best Buy gift card - at the Illinois Math Kangaroo awards ceremony May 10 at the Hyatt Lisle.

More than 7 million children from more than 50 countries participated in the 2014 international Math Kangaroo competition, including more than 16,000 children from the United States.
