Fire at Warrenville bakery

A fire at a bakery in Warrenville caused about $20,000 in damages on Thursday night, but no one was injured.

The Warrenville Fire Protection District responded to Sandy's Bakery, 2S529 Route 59, at 7:16 p.m. on Thursday, Lt. Judd Weber said.

The business, which is a center unit in a strip mall, was occupied at the time of the fire, but everyone was able to evacuate.

During the fire, crews had to open up the roof and several walls to extinguish hot spots, but the fire was contained to the one business, Weber said.

Thirteen surrounding departments helped Warrenville with the fire. Crews were on the scene for about 90 minutes between extinguishing the fire and cleanup.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Weber said the flames were centered around a neon electrical sign on the front of the business. The bakery will be closed today.
