Glenbard S. can't pull off perfect outcome

With Riverside-Brookfield's Will Kincanon pitching like the ace he is, Glenbard South's baseball team needed to play close to perfect in the field and on the mound.

For five innings on Tuesday, the Raiders did just that.

The Bulldogs ultimately broke through in the sixth and seventh innings, however, to claim a 7-1 victory over Glenbard South in the first matchup of a key three-game Metro Suburban Conference series in Glen Ellyn.

A 4-run top of the sixth was all the margin Kincanon needed. The Middle Tennessee State-bound senior righty pitched a 2-hitter with 13 strikeouts and 3 walks while allowing no earned runs.

Riverside-Brookfield (13-8, 5-5) scored all its runs in the final two innings and let Kincanon take care of the rest.

"We've been struggling to hit the ball all year," Kincanon said. "Once we got a couple runs, the way I was pitching and the way I found my rhythm, I thought the game was over."

Glenbard South (15-6, 9-1) and starter Nick Yangas claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third after the Raiders loaded the bases with one out. A Will Cornwell grounder looked like it might be an inning-ending double-play ball, but an error allowed an unearned run to score.

A line-drive double play ended the inning to thwart the Raiders' best scoring chance of the game. That play also began a streak of nine straight retired by Kincanon.

"You have to play perfectly when you only score 1 run," said Glenbard South coach Mike Riley. "We know Kincanon's tough, but we needed to get a few more off him. I think (Wednesday's) game is big for us. We'll be playing tough teams in the conference from here on out, so we'll see where we're at."

Kincanon's RBI single tied it in the sixth, and Jake Surprenant's sacrifice fly put the Bulldogs ahead to stay. Adolfo Linares added a 2-run single for insurance. Kincanon sparked a 3-run seventh-inning burst with another 2-run single.

Kyle Carli's one-out double in the bottom of the seventh proved to be Glenbard South's hardest hit ball of the game against Kincanon.

"With him on the mound we have a chance against anyone," said Riverside-Brookfield coach Dallas Till. "He had his 'A' stuff today. This was a big win."
