'Sin in the Second City' selected for book club

After a long cold winter, why not pick up a copy of "Sin in the Second City" and warm up? All readers are invited to join the Des Plaines History Center's Book Discussion Group at a meeting from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the History Center, 781 Pearson Street. Books are available at the Readers Services desk on the third floor of the Des Plaines Public Library.

The history center's choice of "Sin in the Second City" brings the book group back to Chicago with a sharp and popular history of morality, sexuality and prostitution. Author Karen Abbott focuses on the Everleigh Club, a brothel on Dearborn Street.

Her success may stem from the general public's fascination with the seedy stories of history, and why not? Abbott's scope, though, includes an analysis of morality relative to time, gender, class and locale. These elements make it much more than an exhibition of a sultry past, but also a thoughtful consideration of the oldest profession in the context of 20th century Chicago.

For information, call the history center at (847) 391-5399.

The history center acknowledges operating support from the city of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Park District, its members, and other contributors.
