Senator Althoff Speaks about Fox Waterway Legislation

On Thursday, April 24th, the Grant Township Republican Club held its monthly meeting in front of a packed room at the Grant Hall Museum in Ingleside. Their guest speaker was Senator Pam Althoff (R). Ms. Althoff is the Senator for the 32nd District of Illinois representing constituents in both Lake and McHenry County.

The Senator spoke about what is and is not happening in Springfield, balancing the budget, the distribution of tax dollars, and pending legislation. The issue drawing the most attention from the audience, however, was Senator Terry Link's (D) proposed Senate Bill 2696 to dissolve the Fox Waterway Agency. With most audience members living in the area and utilizing the waterways of the Chain-O-Lakes, this topic was one of great concern.

Senator Althoff has worked vehemently to prevent this legislation from passing. In three different hearings, she was able to bring stacks of witness slips from area residents who were against this legislation. According to Ms. Althoff, each time the bill was to be called, the amount of witness slips increased. No previous bill has generated this amount of community involvement. According to the Senator, this bill is currently tabled. This does not mean it will not be resurrected at some point or attached to some other legislation, but for the time being, it is inactive.

At the end of the meeting, the Senator stayed and answered individual questions and concerns. She has promised to come back in the Fall to update Club members on pending issues.

The Grant Township Republican Club meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 P.M. at the Grant Hall Museum in Ingleside. Meetings are open to the public. The next meeting date is May 22nd.
