Elgin man charged with 5th DUI

A 48-year-old Elgin man was charged Saturday afternoon with his fifth DUI and driving with a blood alcohol concentration more than three times the legal threshold.

William L. Bush Jr., of the 700 block of Jefferson Street, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of aggravated DUI.

According to an Elgin police report, Bush was arrested after police were called at about 1:15 p.m. to the 300 block of North Jackson Street for a car that had backed into another car.

Police found Bush asleep at the wheel, the keys in the ignition and the car in reverse.

"Officers were able to wake the defendant by banging on the window. The defendant unlocked the vehicle but fell back asleep," read part of the report.

Bush was taken to the Advocate Sherman Hospital Emergency Room where a blood draw showed a blood alcohol concentration of .268 percent. The legal threshold in Illinois is .08 percent.

According to court records, Bush was charged with DUI in June 1997 in Elgin and sentenced to court supervision and alcoholism treatment. In November 2008, he was arrested on charges of his third overall DUI. He pleaded guilty to the felony charge and was sentenced to three years probation, 90 days in jail, 364 days wearing an alcohol monitoring device and ordered to pay $7,300 in court costs.

Bush also was arrested in March 2009 in Elgin on charges of DUI and driving while his license was revoked. The DUI charge was dropped and he was sentenced to 300 hours community service, records show.

Bush was being held at the Kane County jail on $25,000 bail, and next due in court Friday.
