U-46 radio personalities meet B96 professionals

The WEPS 88.9 FM radio clubs toured Chicago's B96 studios March 4.

Students from each of the Elgin Area School District 46's six high schools also met with on-air personalities and producers of "The J Show." Radio club members had the opportunity to ask questions and hear about what goes into planning a daily live morning radio show.

"Our students work very hard on their own radio programming each week and this experience has shown our students the possibilities of careers in radio and what it takes to be successful," said Superintendent José M. Torres.

The highlight for some students was when on-air personality "J Nice" asked to hear some of WEPS 88.9 FM's radio programs. Clips from Bartlett High School's "The Review Crew" and South Elgin High School's "The Commute with R&B" were played. On-air personalities and producers gave the students positive feedback and offered suggestions to enhance their radio programs.

"It was exciting to have professionals in the field hear what we're creating and get feedback," said Ryan Jenkins, South Elgin High School senior.

Ryan Jenkins and Brianna Cullen host "The Commute with R&B" on WEPS 88.9 FM. "The Commute with R&B" includes topics about pop culture and features a top five countdown of popular songs. It airs Mondays at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

In November 2013, WEPS 88.9 FM relaunched the district's radio station with studio produced content. Student programs air Monday through Friday from 7 to 8 a.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. WEPS continues to air Wisconsin Public radio during the remaining hours of the day.
