In support of Elgin charter school

As a parent of elementary school-aged children in Elgin, I am excited about the possibility of the public math and science-focused elementary school proposed for U46 and the Elgin community.

I believe the charter school will provide another option for families in U-46 who want a challenging learning environment, that focuses on math and science, and uses Expeditionary Learning to provide children with project-based learning.

The Elgin Math and Science Academy will be open to all children in U46, regardless of their income and background, and provide a challenging and nurturing place to learn, grow and develop. This innovative new school will provide a positive option for Elgin students, parents, educators and community members. I am also excited by the possibility of having this new school at the site of the former Fox River Country Day School.

The campus, with its beautiful oak trees, natural areas, historic buildings and proximity to the Fox River and forest preserve will be an enriching and inspiring environment for children to learn about science and nature.

As a homeowner in Elgin, I also see the positive impact that this new school will have on the community and local business. This type of school will be unique in the area, and by providing additional educational options will give local families a reason to stay, while attracting families from outside our district.

I urge the Elgin City Council to approve the lease for the charter school at the Fox River Country Day School site and the U46 School Board to support the Elgin Math and Science Academy Charter School when the application comes before them. This school has the potential to benefit not only current Elgin students, but also generations of children to come.
