Dist. 87 vote simple investment decision

I am voting yes on the March 18 referendum that would allow Glenbard High School District 87 to make vital repairs and facility improvements at all four of our high schools.

I am thinking about this as a very simple investment decision: If the referendum passes, my life goes on with no cost increases, and our schools get better. If the referendum fails, I pocket about $70 per year in reduced taxes, while our teachers and high schoolers continue to deal with aging infrastructure and inadequate learning facilities.

I have tried and failed to think of what I would do with $70 that would deter me from supporting this effort: A couple nosebleed seats at a Bulls game? A dinner for four? A trip to the grocery store? Even investing the money would not yield a convincing return.

We can make no better investment than supporting our high schools, especially when there are students struggling in non-air conditioned buildings, and out-of-date science and technology learning facilities.

I attended Glenbard South from 2000 to 2004 and took advantage of countless opportunities to grow academically, socially, and athletically. I completed my undergraduate studies at Stanford University and have since lived and worked in San Francisco, Washington DC, and Mporokoso, Zambia.

I now live in Wheaton, within District 87 borders and feel privileged to be a part of this community that makes well-being and education a top priority.

I am excited to support the continuation of excellence at Glenbard schools and look forward to voting yes on the ballot. I hope that you will also view this as an easy investment decision, and support the referendum.
