U of I made right call on Salaita

I have been closely following the developments concerning the potential hiring of Steven Salaita by the University of Illinois. His public vulgar, inflammatory and anti-semetic remarks aimed at the people of Israel and its leaders on Twitter are completely unacceptable. Chancellor Phyllis Wise made the right decision in withdrawing the job offer to Salaita.

I do not challenge Salaita's right to voice these views in the public forum, however, the university should not hire anyone who knowingly has such highly emotional and passionate views that could easily be expressed in a school course environment. Such views would shut off all debate by students with contrary views because of potential adverse repercussions from a teacher.

Salaita stated that the language he uses on social media is different from his approach in the classroom where he encourages debate. It is hard for me to accept this statement from one who holds such passionate views. The university should not take the chance. His expressed views are contrary to those of the University as an institution.

As a graduate and supporter of the university, I fully support Chancellor Wise in her decision and am embarrassed by those faculty members that have voted no confidence in the chancellor.
