Midwest work ethic invaluable this season

Our three sons earned degrees from universities in the Midwest. During each parent orientation we attended, someone asked, “Will my kid be able to get a job after graduation?” The response was the same at all schools: Employers, especially California employers, always seek young people from the Midwest to hire because of their reliability, work ethic and dependability. Midwest, huh?

This morning my car wouldn’t start. My fingertips feel like they have frostbite. My heating bill is in the stratosphere. The guy who clears my snow always has a smile on his face as he rings the doorbell to get paid. (Perhaps I should put a cot in the basement for him.) My wife prepares hot soup and I don’t want to put my spoon in the bowl. I want to be in the bowl.

Hello, Al Gore, how about some help? Organize all the global warming believers to march in picket lines. Maybe that will help.

But, hey, we’re Midwesterners. We put on our coat, hat, gloves, scarfs and boots, take care of business and do what needs doing. For that we are justifiably forever proud.
