Accident closes River Road in Des Plaines

River Road between Golf and Rand roads in Des Plaines was closed for nearly six hours while crews cleared the scene of an accident involving a semitrailer truck carrying a huge concrete slab.

Police said the road was open by 9 p.m.

According to police, the incident occurred between 2:30 and 3 p.m.

Authorities said the truck, which was headed south in the righthand lane, made a sudden shift, causing the slab to slip, rendering the truck inoperable and shaking up the driver.

The slab was described as weighing 70,000 pounds.

The driver was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, but authorities said he was not seriously hurt.

Firefighters said the accident flattened the truck’s tires.

Freight train lines were also blocked.
