Men accused of Mt. Prospect burglary

Mount Prospect police charged two men with residential burglary after they forced open the front door of an occupied home Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Police say the pair rang the door bell and knocked on the door about 3:30 p.m. on the 1400 block of South Robert Drive. When no one answered, they forced the door open and fled when they realized someone was inside, police said.

Officers say they located and arrested the two men nearby.

Heriberto J. Varela, 18, of the 1400 block of South Circle Drive in Mount Prospect, and Luis E. Machado, 18, of the 4500 block of West Parker Avenue in Chicago, were both charged with residential burglary. Both appeared in a Rolling Meadows bond court Monday. A judge set Varela’s bond at $20,000 and Machado’s bond at $10,000. They’re expected in court again Jan. 23.
