Police shoot man in Bensenville

Bensenville police said charges are pending against a 24-year-old man who fired on an officer before being wounded himself by gunfire and disarmed.

The identity of the man is being withheld, as are the identities of the police. The man was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.

The incident is being investigated by the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force.

About 6 p.m. Friday, two Bensenville police officers responded to a report of a violation of an order of protection on the 700 block of North Route 83. The officers saw the man walking from that location.

When the officers approached him, the man pointed a handgun at one of the them, police said. The handgun misfired, and the man began running west, police said.

The officers chased him, and when they reached the area of 1062 Tower Lane, an officer and the man exchanged gunfire.

Police said the man was struck multiple times, and the officers took him into custody when he collapsed a short distance away.

The officers were not struck by any rounds, police said.
