Hampshire Township man killed while crossing road near his home

A Hampshire Township man was killed Monday night when he was struck by a vehicle on Allen Road while walking back to his house after getting his mail, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Fred Bishop, 78, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, west of Route 20, Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said Tuesday.

Gengler said the initial investigation shows Bishop was crossing the road after retrieving his mail when he was struck by an eastbound 2004 Honda Accord.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from Hampshire, was transported to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with minor injuries, Gengler said. The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Kane County Sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate the crash, Gengler said.

No tickets have been issued, Gengler said Tuesday morning, and detectives have not determined if drugs, alcohol or texting played a role in the crash.
