Buffalo Grove man to receive French Legion of Honor

A Buffalo Grove World War II veteran will join four other Chicago area men in receiving the French Legion of Honor on Friday, Nov. 8, “for their extraordinary bravery in liberating France during World War II.”

It is France's highest honor.

The Consul General of France in Chicago, Graham Paul, will present the five veterans with their Legion of Honor medals during a special ceremony at the Alliance Française de Chicago at 2:30 p.m.

“Thanks to their courage, to our American friends and allies, France has been living in peace for the past six decades. We shall never forget,” said Consul General Paul.

The five veterans to become Knights of the Legion of Honor are: Abe Kamikow of Buffalo Grove; Robert R. McClarren of Deerfield; William M. Thorns of Frankfort; Shelby F. Westbrook of Chicago and Abe Zlatin of Hazel Crest.

The Legion of Honor is the highest distinction that France can bestow upon those who have achieved remarkable deeds for France. Founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the National Order of the Legion of Honor recognizes eminent service to the French Republic. Recipients of this honor are named by decree signed by the President of the Republic.
