A 41-year-old driver rear-ended a stopped truck on Route 41 in Gurnee on Monday afternoon and was seriously injured, Gurnee firefighters said.

The crash happened just after noon on Route 41 north of Stearns School Road. The victim’s Scion was traveling north when it hit a stopped road-marking truck, causing extensive damage to his vehicle, said Gurnee Fire Department Lt. David Douglass.

Firefighters removed the vehicle’s door and cut away the dashboard that had collapsed around the driver.

The victim was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center with life-threatening injuries that included numerous broken bones in his legs, a broken vertebrate, a broken arm and a collapsed lung, Douglass said.

Nobody else was injured, he said.
