Barrington church turns 150

The public is invited to attend the 150th anniversary lunch for St. Paul United Church of Christ in Barrington. The event begins at noon, Sunday, Nov. 3, at Biltmore Country Club in Barrington.

The church has served Barrington and the surrounding areas since 1863.

The afternoon will include special guests, historical pictorials, live music, and opportunities to share memories of the past and dreams for the future.

The same year the church was formed, President Lincoln dedicated the Gettysburg Cemetery and the village of Barrington was incorporated. Originally begun as the United St. Paul’s Church at Barrington, land was also acquired for the St. Paul Cemetery, in which several Civil War veterans are interned.

The church’s history reflects the roots of the German immigrants who settled in the area. Once part of the German Evangelical Reformed Church, at one time three services a month were held in German, and one in English. The first time English was used for the annual meeting report was in 1924. St. Paul joined the United Church of Christ in 1960.

The cost for the luncheon is $30/adults and $10/children 12 and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling Dee McCarthy at (847) 381-4406.
