People with real experience needed
In the Sept. 16 edition, the Daily Herald published an article on the transportation boards and their waste of money. Perhaps that is because the Illinois Statute (70 ILCS 3616 3B) does not demand transportation expertise in the criteria for selection by county chairmen.
A cursory review of the current transportation boards reveals lawyers, accountants, and political associates have been approved. It appears that only one board member has any form of transportation experience.
The lack of this experience creates a condition ripe for “cronyism,” defined as intimate companion, associate or familiar friend.
Two years ago, I wrote a letter about an appointee who lacked transportation experience, but was a former county chairman.
The cronyism will continue unless the state law is changed requiring county chairmen to give priority to applicants with transportation expertise.
