New sign reflects Hoffman Estates road’s true name

Passers-by will soon have an opportunity to learn more about the history of Jones Road in Hoffman Estates thanks to a new sign that explains the original name was really Jahns Road.

The village board approved the installation of a special historic and informational sign on Jones close to Higgins Road to tell residents and visitors about its past.

Village Historian Pat Barch recently found two pieces of evidence supporting that road’s original name. They include a precinct list of registered voters from 1956 showing three voters on Jahns Road and an entry from 1906 in a book of the Schaumburg Township Highway Commissioners Proceedings that describes the road passing along the land of Fred and William Jahn.

Barch said it has become apparent that sometime after 1956 an error or change was made in the name of the road. She, along with the Historical Sites Commission, requested that the historical sign be installed to maintain and promote accurate village history.

Jones Road is a nearly one mile stretch running south from Hassell Road to Higgins Road.
