Vacant home catches fire near Hawthorn Woods
No injuries were reported from a fire that broke out Saturday night at a vacant home near Hawthorn Woods, authorities said.
Lake Zurich Fire Department Deputy Chief Donald Golubski said crews were summoned about 6:35 p.m. to the home on the 26000 block of Fairfield Road. Firefighters initially were dispatched to investigate what was described as outdoor smoke in the unincorporated area near Hawthorn Woods.
However, fire officials said, police in the vicinity discovered the smoke was coming from what’s been known as a longtime vacant or abandoned two-story house. Firefighters found heavy smoke from the second floor and flames in the rear.
Crews used a defensive fire attack from the outside, said Golubski, because the structure was deemed unsafe for entry. No cause of the fire has been determined, but officials said there were no reports of injuries.
Lake Zurich received assistance from fire departments that included Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary, Countryside, Deerfield, Fox Lake, Fox River Grove, Libertyville, Long Grove, Mundelein, Nunda, Palatine, Round Lake and Wauconda.
