Palatine vocalist, 18, takes top spot in suburban talent competition

Schaumburg police seek woman’s attackers

Schaumburg police are requesting the public’s help in identifying two suspects in the beating of a 30-year-old woman early Friday morning. The victim reportedly was taking garbage to a receptacle in an apartment complex parking lot when she was confronted by two men who beat her unconscious. Full story.

Huntley program aims to ready special ed grads for adulthood

Huntley High School special education student Tess Podraza, 18, wants to be more independent, but to reach that level she’ll need more confidence and sharper life skills. She and her family hope a new program through Huntley Area School District 158 will give her both. Life Instruction Guiding Huntley Transition is designed to give Tess and her peers support and preparation for the adult world. “A lot of it is going to reinforce things that she learned and make her stronger with her life skills,” said Tia Podraza, Tess’ mother. Clearbrook’s Color Blast garners fun and $30,000

Clearbrook’s first Color Blast 5K run in downtown Arlington Heights pelted about 1,300 runners and walkers with blue, green and other colored cornstarch that drifted into clouds among dozens of spectators lining the streets. Sculpture of Naperville Founder placed at homestead

Naperville founder Joseph Naper returned to his homestead Friday — at least symbolically — as city public works crews installed a 1,500-pound sculpture of the pioneering settler at Mill Street and Jefferson Avenue. The sculpture officially will be unveiled and dedicated during a ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at the site near what’s now downtown Naperville. Full story.

Comic Con meshes all kinds of entertainment

The comic and silver screen worlds united once again last weekend at the 41st annual Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. To the utmost delight of comic fans, Stan Lee was present. The $200 tickets for a “meet and greet” with Lee — the co-creator of Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men and Iron Man — were sold out, as was the $525 VIP package. Full story.

Billed as one of the largest vegetarian festivals in North America, Veggie Fest kicked off two days of food, music and information about healthy eating Saturday in Naperville. More than 30,000 people were expected to attend this year’s festival, organizers said. Full story.

Quentin Road expansion back on track

The proposed expansion of Quentin Road through the Deer Grove Forest Preserve near Palatine was a hot topic a few years ago, with frequent forums seeking public input and community groups debating the project’s scope. But the project stalled, the forums stopped and the websites dedicated to support or opposition became largely inactive. Prospect Hts. woman shot by pellet gun

A 56-year-old Prospect Heights woman suffered a pellet gun wound to her forearm Friday evening while gardening outside her home on the 200 block of Wolf Road. Prospect Heights Police Chief Jamie Dunne said the woman is believed to have been the victim of an errant shot. Full story.

Officer from Cary held on sex abuse charges

A Cook County correctional officer has been de-deputized and is being held on $50,000 bond after being arrested on Saturday on charges of unlawful restraint and criminal sexual abuse, officials said. Daniel Robinson, 39, of Cary, was arrested on Saturday in West suburban Berkeley. According to media reports of Robinson’s bond hearing on Sunday, he is accused of forcibly detaining and sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl he met online. Full story.
