Palatine man’s body found in trash compactor

Palatine police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old man who fell into a trash compactor Tuesday evening, according to a news release.

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Roger Mirro. He said Mirro’s death was ruled an accident.

Mirro’s wife called police around 9:30 p.m. to report that her husband was missing.

She said she spoke to her husband over the phone as she left work and told him she was going out with friends. When she arrived at their home about 4½ hours later she couldn’t find him.

A neighbor said he saw Mirro around 6:30 p.m. He told police that Mirro asked for a key to the trash room in a lower-level parking garage of their complex. Mirro told the neighbor that he lost his cellphone and thought it fell down the garbage chute.

Officers went to the garbage room, where they found a lock removed from the door and a ladder propped along the side of the trash compactor. Mirro’s body was found inside the trash compactor with signs of trauma caused by machine.
