Hoffman Estates seafood restaurant closes after 24 years

Dover Straits seafood restaurant has shut its doors after 24 years in Hoffman Estates.

The restaurant, located at 1149 W. Golf Road, closed Sunday, June 23, according to owner Arthur Metropulos. He said he decided to close the restaurant after Muller's Woodfield Acura car dealership — located on the corner of Higgins Road and Gannon Drive, less than a half mile north of Dover Straits — expressed interest in the property.

“We decided to sell to them,” Metropulos said, adding that he had “mixed feelings” about leaving Hoffman Estates. “We could not say no to the offer.”

A representative of the dealership could not be reached for comment Monday.

Metropulos said a second Dover Straits location in Mundelein is doing well and will remain open.

Hoffman Estates Director of Planning Peter Gugliotta said the village has confirmed a sale was completed, but the new owner has not presented the village with any proposals yet. Village zoning would allow for a car dealership to move into the Dover Straits location, which is near the intersection of Golf Road and Gannon Drive.

“I'm not sure what their short-term or long-term plans are at this point,” he said, adding that he could not confirm the name of the new owner.

Dover Straits is located on approximately 3.4 acres, according to Gugliotta. The building was constructed in 1981 and originally housed Bill Knapp's Restaurant.

Gugliotta didn't think the property was being actively marketed prior to its sale, but said village officials had heard for years that Metropulos was interested in selling.

An Infiniti dealership, which Gugliotta said replaced a Brown's Chicken several years ago, is located just east of the Dover Straits property, across Gannon Drive. To the north, just across Golf Road, a new Audi dealership opened last week where the village's police station was once located.

“We're waiting for the new owner to come in with a proposal at this point,” Gugliotta said.
