Elk Grove Hometown Parade to have sports theme

Sports of all kinds will be featured at the Elk Grove Home Town Parade with this year’s “Sports on the Boulevard” theme. Baseball, football, hockey, soccer, cycling, rollerblading, as well as NASCAR Racing, bull riding, Klondike sled races and ribbon gymnastics will parade down the boulevard.

The village is proud to announce that the Unites States Navy Band will be back again this year. Other returning favorites include the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps, Elk Grove High School Marching Grenadiers, Kilties Drum & Bugle Corps, New Generation Fancy Drill Team, Chuck-A-Roo and the Fabulous Memories. Sports team mascots Tommy Hawk, Wolves’ Skates, and Boomers’ Coop will entertain.

Don Kerstin is the parade’s Grand Marshal. Kerstin has been a lifelong volunteer in Elk Grove and is active with the Community Spirit Awards committee, the garden club and historical society.

He drives seniors to doctor’s visits, shops for them and picks up their medicines. He picks up food and has volunteered at the food pantry for the needy and donates extra vegetable crops to the township. Kerstin has played Santa Claus for 52 years for different groups.

Parade sponsors include Creative Works (candy), Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce, Grove Memorial Chapel, A & H Plumbing & Heating, Chicago Offset and Jerry Castle & Son Hi-Lift, Inc.

The parade kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 15, along Elk Grove Boulevard, from Tonne to Lions Drive. Everyone is welcome to attend. Come early for the Rotary Fest and stay afterward for the fireworks and more Rotary Fest entertainment.
