Hoffman Estates fishing derby June 8

The annual Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce/Sears Holdings Corp. Community Fishing Derby is back. Prepare to cast at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 8 at South Ridge Lake, 1450 Freeman Road, Hoffman Estates. There are no age and residency restrictions.

This annual event attracts hundreds of fishermen, children and families for a day of recreation and prizes — the top prize is a $1,000 shopping spree at Cabela’s in Hoffman Estates. Every 10 minutes a door prize will be announced and registered fishermen may be able to win fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and lures, sports equipment and other prizes. Prizes have been donated by area businesses.

South Ridge Lake will be stocked with 100 tagged bluegill and catfish, and each tag worth from $10 to $100. This is a catch-and-release event, and barbless hooks are highly recommended. The first 200 children registered receive a fishing theme T-shirt. However, those catching, registering and releasing any fish tagged from prior years, will receive a token award, as well.

The Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce has hosted this event annually, and this is the 18th year. The event also has food vendors, bait sales, a fishing rigging-help station, prize tent and more.

Registration is $5 per person. Register at the chamber office, 2200 W. Higgins Road, or at Cabela’s and Hoffman Estates Community Banks at 1375 Palatine Road, 2200 W. Higgins Road and 2497 W. Golf Road. For details call the chamber office at (847) 781-9100.

Bring your own pole and tackle, but no fishing license is required. You may bring coolers of food and nonalcoholic beverages, but all coolers will be checked for content.

Sears Holdings Corp., Hoffman Estates Community Bank, Cabela’s, Alden Polar Creek, AT&T, BMO Harris Bank, BIK & Co. LLP, Carpenter’s Union local 839, the Daily Herald, and the Hoffman Estates Park District are just a few of the Derby sponsors.
