Credit union donates $5,000 for Waukegan library expansion

Consumers Credit Union recently donated $5,000 in support of the Waukegan Public Library’s Literacy Suite Expansion Project. The program works in partnership with the College of Lake County, offering numerous language courses and Spanish speaking literacy programs to area residents.

The literacy program was created some 28 years ago to provide adult and family literacy at no cost to its students. With 189,000 adults in Lake County in need of a GED, English as a Second Language instruction and other education basics, the Waukegan Public Library responded to the need by providing additional space to host the program.

The Literacy Suite Expansion project increased the number of classrooms from three rooms to five rooms dedicated for programming and study space.

“Language and literacy barriers create a divide within the community,” said Sean M. Rathjen, president of the member-owned credit union.

“We believe local businesses have a responsibility to help close that gap. In that spirit, Consumers Credit Union is delighted to contribute to the Literacy Suite Expansion Project and support programs that address the ever-increasing need for relevant educational programming for adults and families in the greater Waukegan area.”
