Exam of bomb plot suspect expected in August

TULSA, Okla. — A mental evaluation of an Elk Grove Village native charged with plotting to firebomb dozens of Oklahoma churches will be finished around late August.

A letter to U.S. Magistrate Paul J. Cleary and filed this week with the court estimates the evaluation of Gregory Weiler II will be done about Aug. 21.

The letter from the North Carolina-based federal medical center says a final report should be filed with the court about two weeks later.

Cleary had earlier found Weiler incompetent to stand trial.

Weiler is accused of planning to destroy 48 churches in northeastern Oklahoma and prepared to launch the attacks from a tiny motel he was living in near Interstate 44 in Miami, Okla.

He was arrested in October.
