Hoffman Estates photo contest looks at mental health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s time to think about what mental health means to all of us.

One out of every two Americans has a diagnosable mental disorder, and 80 to 90 percent of mental disorders are treatable. However, fewer than half of adults and only one third of children get help.

During May, the Village of Hoffman Estates Department of Health and Human Services is requesting photos that answer the question, “What is mental health to you?” Examples include how you express your feelings; what is your relationship to your emotions and/or self; how you care for your mental health; and how mental illness has impacted you and your family.

Send the village your picture with a brief statement explaining how your photo represents mental health. All photos and statements will be displayed anonymously in the Community Art Gallery in the village hall lobby May 27-31. Participants will be entered into a raffle and the winner will be contacted individually. Submissions must be received by May 20 to be eligible for display.

Submit your photos to Sooin Lee at sooin.lee@hoffmanestates.org, or drop them off at the village hall, 1900 Hassell Road (south entrance). For details, call (847) 781-4857.
