Walk to improve athletic program at Kirk School in Palatine

Kirk School in Palatine will be hosting a Community Walk and Wheel-a-thon Sunday, May 19, to raise funds for adapted athletic equipment and field improvement.

Kirk School is a public special day school run by the Northwest Suburban Special Education Organization (NSSEO) with 180 students ranging in age from 5-22 with significant (moderate to severe/profound) cognitive, physical and/or multiple disabilities. The students come from several districts in the Northwest suburbs to receive an adapted curriculum and educational programming.

The athletic field improvement project consists of different phases to make the field behind Kirk’s parking lot of use for special needs students. It includes fencing in the area, adding a track, and putting in exercise equipment for high school-aged students and young adults.

The Walk and Wheel-a-thon starts at the school, 520 S. Plum Grove Road, with registration at 12:30 p.m. The participants will take a 1.25 mile walk or “wheel” through the neighborhood.

Following the walk, there will be carnival games and activities, music, refreshments, raffles, and a silent auction.
