Recycling meets shredding for Extravaganza Saturday in St. Charles

The Kane County Recycling Extravaganza, a free residential recycling and document shredding event, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, behind the Kane County Circuit Clerk and Traffic Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.
They will be collecting for reuse or recycling the following items: electronics, holiday light strings, and scrap metal (no large “white goods” or Freon-containing appliances); books of any age or condition, hard cover or paperback; bikes, bike parts, helmets, bike baskets, crutches, wheelchairs, and sewing machines; polystyrene foam No. 6 (plates, cups, clamshell containers, block Styrofoam, or Bubble Wrap, but no “peanuts”); and 4-foot fluorescent tubes from residential sources only. They will not accept compact fluorescent light bulbs as most hardware stores will take them.
They will be accepting used residential carpet and carpet tiles and “Rebond” carpet padding (the speckled kind). They will not accept rubber or felt padding as it is not recyclable.
Donate clean textiles and shoes, including used clothes, linens, towels, hats, purses, belts, paired shoes and stuffed animals. All wearable items will be sold in developing countries to those in need of affordable clothing items. Non-wearable items that are stained or torn are graded and recycled into wiping cloths or for fiber content.
There also will be confidential document destruction for residential use only (no businesses). Bring up to 4-5 boxes of sensitive documents containing confidential information. Do not bring periodicals, or other paper that does not need to be shredded and can go in your household recycling bin. All paper collected will be shredded on site and then taken for recycling.
Earth Paint Collection Systems will be collecting latex paint for recycling. Latex paint is nontoxic but difficult to dispose of because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary. No oil-based product will be accepted. Latex paint will be the only item that has a recycling fee per container ($1.50 per quart, $2.50 per gallon, $3.50 per two-gallon, or $8 per give-gallon), payable by the resident with cash or check.
They will not be accepting oil paint or other household hazardous waste; tires and motor oil; car or truck batteries; office or school supplies; or anything that is not on the list above. Visit countyofkane.org/pages/recycling.
