Park City man dies from knife wound; 14-year-old held

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s office is reviewing the case of a 14-year-old boy who is held in connection with a fatal attack on a Park City man.

Fausto Reynaga, 29, who suffered stab wounds in the March 29 attack, died Thursday morning at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He contracted sepsis caused by a stab wound to the abdomen that resulted in peritonitis, according to Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd.

Rudd said the stab wound punctured the colon and bacteria entered the blood stream, eventually shutting down vital organs. Reynaga also had incidental stab wounds to the chest and back and defensive wounds to his palm and finger, Rudd said.

On March 29, Park City police said officers responded to the 4200 block of Greenleaf Street. The caller had said someone was trying to kill him, police said. When they arrived, police found Reynaga on the floor with several stab wounds.

Police said they learned Reynaga had been involved in a verbal altercation with a 14-year-old boy who had fled the scene. The boy was found hiding in the basement of a Waukegan home on April 1 and taken into custody without incident.

He was charged with aggravated battery and has been held at the Depke Juvenile Detention Center near Vernon Hills. The case was being reviewed Thursday by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office.
