Find plan that works for all, Dist. 200

I believe that Jefferson Preschool in Wheaton needs, at the least, a serious rehab, and possibly a rebuild. But I know for sure that Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 taxpayers cannot afford the financing option that is now being proposed on Tuesday’s referendum.

The proposed yearly assessment is reasonable; the final balloon payment in the 11th year (approximately 10 times the yearly assessment) is not acceptable. The district superintendent assures us now that this massive tax bill in the 11th year will somehow be “offset” by a decrease in property taxes. Over 15 years of homeownership have taught me that property taxes never go down. And we the taxpayers, already struggling with looming retirement and college expenses, will be slapped with a truly large hit.

Please, I implore the school board, do not do this. Please crunch the numbers again, redo the financing, give us a plan that will work for everyone, the students at Jefferson who need a better environment, and the taxpayers.
