No injuries as shots fired in Elgin

Elgin police said no one appears to have been harmed during a possible gang-related shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Police responded to a call of shots fired about 1:45 p.m. on the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, Lt. Dan O’Shea said in a news release.

“Officers secured the area and blocked local traffic access while an investigation was conducted. Additionally, the school districts were notified and the buses for the immediate area were delayed until the area was deemed safe,” the release said.

Patrick Mogge, director of school and community relations for Elgin Area School District U-46, said the incident primarily affected students from Harriet Gifford Elementary School.

Principals contacted students’ parents, and staff members volunteered to supervise students in the gym for the duration of the incident, he said.

Investigators from the Gang Unit and Major Investigations Division responded to the scene and conducted interviews with witnesses and residents, O’Shea said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Gang Investigation Division at (847) 289-2646.

Additionally, individuals can provide anonymous tips or information via the crime line at (847) 695-4195 or texting 847411 and including ELGINPD in the beginning of the text, along with the message and/or tip information.
