Stand up for right to feel safe from guns

We need to implement immediate action to help prevent more gun violence in America. The tragedy we have already experienced more than justifies support of the president’s initiative for gun violence prevention.

His initiative includes the following: closing loopholes as we enforce universal background checks and registrations on all gun sales; banning assault weapons and high magazine clips; making schools safer; and providing help for troubled individuals before they possibly reach the point of violence.

Our right to feel safe in America’s public places is being compromised due to a misaligned focus on an outdated, misinterpreted Second Amendment. I can’t imagine what the parents of the Sandy Hook victims are thinking about the Second Amendment right now.

If gun owners do not want to give up their guns, can we at least ask them to carry liability insurance just like car owners are required to? Gun owners need to recognize the grave responsibility that goes along with owning a weapon.

Please contact your congressmen and encourage them to take a stronger stand in support of the president’s initiative toward gun violence prevention. They need to stand up for our right to feel safe in our own communities.
