Endorsements: Dianis, Glogowski, Smith for Algonquin village board

With construction of a long-awaited western bypass finally under way, Algonquin finds itself with a rare opportunity for a suburban community — a real chance to reshape and redefine its downtown to make it both a gathering place for residents and a destination for out-of-towners. Village voters will go to the polls next month to select three village trustees to help lead that effort. The field of four candidates for three board seats features a trio of longtime incumbents — Brian Dianis, Jerry Glogowski and Robert Smith — and challenger Richard Flynn. The newcomer, a 29-year-old business manager, was spurred into local politics last year when his neighborhood fought village plans to remove dozens of trees as part of infrastructure improvements. Though the experience undoubtedly gave Flynn insight, his overall knowledge of village government and issues still falls well short of that of the incumbents, each of whom brings not only experience but credible ideas and solid visions for the community’s future. We endorse Dianis, Glogowski and Smith, but also hope Flynn stays active, perhaps through a seat on a village commission.
