Sugar Grove Village Trustee Kevin Geary, a candidate for Sugar Grove village president, says he likes President Sean Michels, he just "disagrees with the policies and procedures of how the village is run." Geary has been a trustee since 1999, and Michels was a trustee for two years before he became president 14 years ago. Geary, a go-to volunteer in town, is active in the community and was instrumental in the creation of Veterans Park on Main Street. Both candidates have an eye on commercial development and have made a strong push for a full interchange at Route 47 and Interstate 88. We like that Michels has ruled with a steady hand, and when the economy went south several years ago, the village responded by reducing staff through layoffs and attrition. We think both men are hard workers and would do a fine job. We give Michels a slight edge because he's been at the helm while moving the village forward through trying financial times.
