Endorsement: Novak for Lombard village president

The biggest issue facing the next Lombard village president will be to unite a divided village board or, failing that, persuade trustees to set aside their differences and learn to work together. Since the untimely death of longtime Village President William Mueller last August, board members have spent too much time posturing and playing politics, most notably in their clumsy effort to select an acting mayor.

Against that backdrop comes a field of three: Trustee Keith Giagnorio, former York Township Trustee M. Moon Khan and retired DuPage County Treasurer John Lotus Novak. All say their main goal is restoring stability, but the real question becomes who is most likely to do so.

None of the three offers the perfect solution, but Novak’s experience in county government gives him the best chance to help the warring factions find common ground. He also would bring a strong financial background to a village that faces financial challenges, particularly with questions surrounding its role in helping fund the Westin Hotel and Convention Center.
