A man who once served pizza will now serve time for robbing his former employer.

Cory Paytes, 23, of Montgomery, was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison for the Jan. 16, 2012, robbery of a Papa John's pizzeria in Naperville.

Paytes, who used to work at a Papa John's, was masked when he and an accomplice entered the restaurant about 10:15 p.m. and forced two employees to crawl into a freezer at gunpoint, authorities said.

At the time, the men were under police surveillance as part of an investigation into pizza shop robberies in Lisle, Oswego, Plainfield, St. Charles and Yorkville. They were arrested as they ran from the Naperville restaurant with $2,200 and a stolen cellphone. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun. No one was hurt.

Paytes identified himself as an employee of Papa John's when he appeared in bond court last year, and authorities confirmed he used to work there. He pleaded guilty to armed robbery Thursday at a court appearance before DuPage County Judge George Bakalis, who imposed his sentence.

Co-defendant Travis Gamble, 23, of Oswego, pleaded guilty to armed robbery in November and was sentenced by Bakalis to 12 years.

Authorities said the men confessed to several holdups in the area and faced charges in other jurisdictions.
