Firefighters encountered light smoke in the hallway of the 20-unit building. The fire was contained to a single apartment, and the occupant of that unit did not escape, said Batallion Chief Scott Heinrich. The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of relatives.

Officials do not suspect foul play.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes of arrival. Damage to the building was estimated at $20,000.

Firefighters from Bloomingdale, Lombard and Elmhurst assisted Addison. The fire remains under investigation.
