Another drug case dismissed in wake of charges against Schaumburg cops
Cook County prosecutors on Monday dismissed drug charges against a 22-year-old Schaumburg man whose arrest involved former Schaumburg undercover officer Matthew Hudak, one of three former undercover officers facing criminal drug conspiracy charges in DuPage County.
John Abel has been in Cook County Jail on a $400,000 bond since his March 2012 arrest on charges he intended to deliver hydrocodone, cannabis and mushrooms.
Dismissal of drug case tied to Schaumburg cops is a ‘second chance,’ Palatine man says
After obtaining a search warrant, Schaumburg police went to Abel's home where they recovered drugs, scales, log books and money and placed him under arrest, prosecutors said during Abel's bond hearing.
At the time, Abel was on parole for a 2009 burglary, prosecutors said. In exchange for his guilty plea on that charge, Abel was sentenced to five years in prison with recommendation for the Impact Incarceration Program, also known as boot camp.
Hudak and former officers John Cichy and Terrance O'Brien pleaded not guilty to charges they skimmed drugs from police seizures and sold the product through a former informant. All three have resigned from the force and remain free on bond.
