Lake Zurich dance team wins two national trophies

Submitted by Kim Carey

The Lake Zurich High School Varsity Dance Team rounded out its 2012-13 season with a trip to Disney World and two national trophies.

The team received a fourth-place trophy in the large varsity hip-hop category at the 2013 UDA National Dance Team Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. The team also won a trophy for its 19th-place finish in the large varsity poms category.

“We went to Orlando with the goal of doing at least as well as last year, and we exceeded that goal,” coach Theresa Johlie said. “We finished higher this year in both hip-hop and poms. The girls’ hard work paid off.”

More than 300 high school and all-star dance teams from 39 states participated in the national championship, sponsored by the Universal Dance Association. All teams participated in a semifinal qualifying event Feb. 2, and the top-scoring teams advanced to the finals Feb. 3.

Teams qualified to participate in the national championship at UDA summer camps.
