An Aurora man has been charged with driving under the influence and aggravated reckless driving after smashing his car into a utility pole in North Aurora Sunday afternoon, critically injuring his 39-year-old passenger, police said.

Victor M. Alvarez, 35, of the 1400 block of Golden Oaks Parkway, was being held on $100,000 bail and is due in court again Feb. 21, according to police and court records.

He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.

According to North Aurora police, Alvarez was driving a silver Nissan Murano north on River Road (Route 25) shortly after 2 p.m. when he lost control and hit a utility pole about 100 feet north of Ridge Road.

The passenger, a West Chicago man whose name was not released, was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Police said he was in critical condition Sunday; his condition was not available Monday.

According to court records, Alvarez was arrested by North Aurora police in June 2006 and charged with DUI. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months supervision, fined $1,505, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and attend a victim impact panel.

He also was cited for transportation of open alcohol by North Aurora police in October 2007 and fined $150, records show.

River Road was closed until 7 p.m. Sunday from Ridge Road to Banbury Road while investigators collected data and processed the scene.

Alvarez must post $10,000 to be free while his case is pending.
