House rule on review of bills is an outrage

On Jan. 30, the Illinois House of Representatives voted along strict partisan lines to establish the new rules of operation for the 98th General Assembly. The House Democrats, led by Speaker Mike Madigan, approved House Rules that limit transparency and fair consideration of important legislation. Bills can now be amended and offered for a vote with just one hour to review — one hour!

Some of these bills are hundreds of pages. Furthermore, the Democratic majority has eliminated the requirement that our filed bills get assigned to an appropriate committee for consideration.

Considering this power now consolidated to just a few, Illinoisans ought to be outraged by these strict partisan rules that abuse the legislative process.
