Small acts help solve big problems

Serving our communities in Springfield as a new state representative is a tremendous honor, and a responsibility I take very seriously. There are no quick fixes to the challenges that Illinois faces, but however great those challenges may be, I am inspired and motivated by the amazing generosity and selflessness I saw on last Saturday’s National Day of Service.

The men and women who freely offer their talents, their passions and their hard work for the benefit of others stand as an example of all that is great about our suburban communities, and remind me that no challenge is insurmountable.

On Monday, we paused to celebrate the life and recognize the sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who gave everything to make the country he loved a better place and continues to inspire that nation to pursue the promise of its founding: to form a more perfect union.

In the memory of Dr. King and following in the example set by so many during the National Day of Service, I ask that we take time to recognize all that our neighbors, our communities, and our great nation have given us, and find a way to give a little back. Whether it’s giving blood, donating clothes in your closet that no longer fit, or volunteering with one of the many groups in our area that serve those in need of comfort, no act of generosity is too small. Small steps add up, and over time they solve even the greatest challenges.
